All  5th Grade students experience 55 minutes of Music within their Special's Rotation!​

Music Appreciation

  • Western Classical Music History- study how the development of western civilization, societal development, and technical advances have effected the development of music starting in Europe as well as world wide

    • Medieval Musical Period​-

      • Origins of the woodwind instruments family​

      • Historical context of who first started notating music and how it has evolved into today's music notation

      • Secular and Sacred music- listen, compare and contrast, learn and perform music

    • Renaissance Period-

      • Invention of the metal brass and origins of the brass family​

      • How science and technological advances were sparked by the societal climate

      • How these advances are at the root of today's music, cultures and history of music on North and South America today

      • How multiple cultures can come together to create a new and unique cultures

      • Hispanic Heritage Study- learn about how the traditions and cultures that were already evolved on the American continents came together with Spain, France and English cultures to create our cultures today

        • EX: Dia De Los Muertos- A Catholic holiday in Spain combined with an Aztec Holiday in the region we now call Mexico. Both traditions combined to create Dia De Los Muertos​

      • Listen, compare and contrast, learn and perform music as well as movement games from various European and Hispanic cultures

Music Literacy

  • Learning to read notes for instruments by identifying the letter names of the the lines and spaces on the treble clef

  • Learning solfeg to read notes vocally from a musical score

  • Reading rhythms including quarter notes, quarter rests, eight notes, sixteenth notes, half notes, whole notes, half rests and whole rests

  • Music Theory- 

    • Learning musical terms that describe tempo​

    • Learning musical terms that describe loud/soft

    • Learning musical terms for the symbols used in a musical score enabling students to read music with multiple parts effectively

    • Learn how time signatures, barlines, repeat signs, coda and da capo work in a musical score​

  • Ukulele- We will transfer our Music Theory, performance, and sight reading skill to recorder this year through our "Ukulele Karate" program!​

Movement- 

  • Learn movement games and dances from across the globe

  • Internalize the beat as we effectively work as a team to complete two and three part movement activities

  • Connect the movement game's culture, traditions and societal development as related to the game we are playing

  • Connect our music terms, structures and to the movements and use critical thinking to decipher how the music effected the choice in movement for the given traditional movement game
